A place created by determination and a love of the sea
Set amidst the rugged landscape, where the sea sets the agenda every day, lies Thorupstrand Fiskehus – created by people with a deep love for the sea and the life that revolves around it. Here, it is not just the fish that takes centre stage, but the whole story behind it: the small boats, the sustainable coastal fishing and the community that keeps the traditions alive. The fish house is run by local enthusiasts who are passionate about preserving a unique culture and passing it on. With respect for nature and proud traditions of craftsmanship, they transform the day’s catch into simple, tasty dishes – served just a few steps from where the fish is landed.

Nature-inspired cuisine in Slettestrand
According to the Jutland Law of 1241, you are allowed to gather as much as you can carry in your hat. And there is plenty to choose from in Jammerbugten, where more than 370 edible plants grow wild. Once upon a time, these wild plants were a natural ingredient in every kitchen. Today, we have forgotten how to use them, but you can learn all about it at Slettestrand!
At Madsmedjen, you can, among other things, learn about nature’s larder in a cosy den with a beamed ceiling, lambskins, rustic plank tables and the smoky scent from the wood-fired ovens used to roast and smoke everything from mackerel and roe deer to herbs such as yarrow and bog myrtle. They call it nature gastronomy, a sensory dining experience where participants gather wild ingredients themselves in the countryside and join in the cooking. It is a far cry from the typical ‘pick-and-eat’ concept; here, it is all about connecting with nature and coming together over a good meal.
