SMK Thy - Statens Museum for Kunst
On August 29, 2025, SMK Thy will open in spectacular new surroundings in Doverodde on the Limfjord. Here, the National Gallery of Denmark will move parts of the national collection out into the countryside, making world art accessible in scenic surroundings far from the big city.
Thanks to a generous donation from the A.P. Møller Foundation, the dream of a national gallery in Thy is now becoming a reality. The building was designed by Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter, who have created an architectural meeting place where art, history, and landscape merge.
Opening exhibition: The Journey from Paris
SMK Thy opens with the exhibition The Journey from Paris, which tells the story of how some of the collection's most iconic works found their way from Paris to Copenhagen in the early 1900s. The works include pieces by some of the biggest names in modernism – Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, André Derain, Georges Braque, Raoul Dufy, and Suzanne Valadon.
The exhibition shows how an enterprising collaboration – including with a visionary grain merchant from North Jutland – made it possible for French modernism to become part of Denmark's national art treasure.
A museum in and with nature
SMK Thy will be a permanent exhibition venue under SMK, where the works can be experienced in interaction with the architecture, history, and unique landscape of the Limfjord. The vision is to create a new model for how a national gallery can be locally rooted and internationally oriented at the same time.
With the opening in Doverodde, Denmark will gain a new cultural powerhouse – a place for contemplation, art experiences, and encounters between people and nature.
