The Water tower in Løkken
Visit Løkken’s historic water tower and discover its story – with fantastic views of the town, sea and dunes.

Løkken Water Tower
Løkken Water Tower was inaugurated on 1 July 1917 and formed the foundation of the town’s water supply. The tower could hold 175,000 litres of water, which was distributed to local residents when they turned on their taps. Originally, the plan was to have capacity for “only” 140,000 litres, but negotiations with contractor Axel P. Gudnitz resulted in the tower being built one metre higher – increasing its capacity by 35,000 litres.
Inside the water tower was a pump that pumped in water whenever the water level became low. During the tower’s early years, the pump was powered by a windmill located at Løkken Waterworks. This kept the water moving and prevented it from freezing during the winter.
On the eastern side of the tower, you can see a square frame stretched between wires. In the past, it held a floating ball that showed the water level.
At the top of the water tower is a two-metre-long copper weather vane in the shape of a fish, showing the direction of the wind. It was installed in 1953 and made locally by a blacksmith. In 1969, the tower’s slate roof and copper guttering were replaced. Løkken Water Tower remained in operation until 1975.
At the foot of the tower, Bodil Dam’s Solhvervssøjle (Solstice Column) was installed in 2004. It shows where the sun sets at the winter and summer solstices. On the longest and shortest days of the year, local residents gather here to celebrate the sun and the changing seasons.
From Løkken Water Tower, you can enjoy a wonderful view of the sea and the protected dunes. It is definitely worth a visit during your time in Løkken!
