A unique gold ornament discovered in West Jutland is currently on display at Holstebro Museum.

The pendant is more than 1,000 years old and may have been personally given by the Byzantine emperor to a Viking serving in his imperial guard.

The piece consists of a crescent-shaped gold plate surrounded by a frame of small gold beads and gold bands. The motif of two birds surrounding a tree or plant is believed to symbolise the Tree of Life.

The pendant is a Danish treasure find (danefæ) and is on loan from the National Museum of Denmark to Holstebro Museum.

No similar piece has ever been found in Scandinavia before, and only around ten comparable examples are known worldwide.
