Art and Exhibitions at Børglum Abbey

Børglum Abbey is not only one of North Jutland’s most significant historical monuments. It is also a vibrant cultural centre where art, history, and architecture come together in a truly unique setting.

Throughout the year, visitors can enjoy changing art exhibitions featuring both established and contemporary artists. The historic halls, stables, and exhibition spaces provide a remarkable backdrop for the artworks, allowing guests to experience them in a very special way.

Today, Børglum Abbey is owned and inhabited by the sixth and seventh generations of the Rottbøll family. Over the years, owners Anne and Hans Rottbøll have opened the abbey to the public and created a cultural and historical gathering place with a strong focus on art, heritage, and the story of life at the former monastery and manor house.

Current Exhibition: Come Clown

This autumn, Børglum Abbey presents the exhibition Come Clown featuring the artist couple Helle Abildgaard and Viggo Salting.

Through paintings, drawings, and graphic works, visitors are invited into the fascinating world of the circus. The artist couple are the only artists to have followed the legendary Circus Benneweis behind the scenes, documenting life behind the ring over many years.

Today, they continue to explore the people, atmosphere, and stories of the circus. Helle Abildgaard's works are filled with magic, performers, and animals, while Viggo Salting explores the psychological interplay between the White Clown, the Auguste clown, and the person behind the mask.

The Bayeux Tapestry

One of the abbey's most impressive attractions is the Danish replica of the famous Bayeux Tapestry. Over a period of 14 years, nine dedicated embroiderers worked on the approximately 70-metre-long reproduction of the historic medieval tapestry.

Today, the artwork can be experienced in the former horse stables and is a unique attraction for both history enthusiasts and art lovers.
