Today, Thorsminde is an atmospheric holiday destination where nature, history and everyday life blend together, and where it is never far from great experiences, fresh sea air and moments that slow the pace of life.

Thorsminde – charm and bustling activity
Fishing has left a deep mark on the town, and there is no doubt that this is the main industry here. Ever since the lock was built, the sea and fishing have been the lifeblood of the town, and today you can buy fish fresh from the North Sea – such as catfish, salmon, lobster, prawns, cod, crabs – and whatever else the 12 commercial fishermen in Thorsminde catch.
But the fishing village also offers a variety of historical tales.
Like so many other places along the West Coast, Thorsminde has, over time, been shaped by the unpredictable North Sea, for better or worse. Dramatic tales of fate from the sea have left their mark on Thorsminde’s history and self-image, but one event in particular has left a lasting impression.
One of the stories you can hear about is that of one of the greatest shipwrecks in 1811, in which nearly 1,400 people perished just off Thorsminde. Here, two large English ships of the line, the St. George and the Defence, were wrecked. This tragic event is the reason why the first St. George Shipwreck Museum was founded in Thorsminde, and today the museum displays a wide range of artefacts from the two English ships. Just south of the town lie the Dødemandsbjergene, a burial ground in the dunes that bears witness to that fateful morning.
